We kicked things off by sharing stories from our favorite vacations. Shirley had us cracking up with her tales of road trips, like that one time they hit Disney World when it was still pretty new. She also reminisced about an adventurous trip to Denver, complete with navigating cow paths and near gas shortages.

Kim took us to sunnier climes, sharing her experience at a destination wedding in Nagril, Jamaica. The idea of being absolutely unplugged — no emails, no calls, just beach and lobster — sounds like paradise, doesn’t it?

Tom brought up his trip to Hawaii, full of good times and beautiful memories. And I shared my own two cents about family trips and my unforgettable honeymoon in Saint Martin. It's clear we all value those moments to recharge and step away from work for a bit.

Starting a Business: From Scratch or Through Acquisition?

Buying an Existing Business

Tom and I are both big fans of the idea of buying an existing business, especially if you’re new to the game. Tom emphasized how much easier it is to secure financing for a business with a proven track record. Banks are much more likely to open their vaults for a business that’s already doing well than for a fresh idea with no history.

You’re not just buying the business’s customers — you’re also getting its team and systems, which can be a huge help. It makes the transition smoother and gives you a better chance of early success.

Starting from Scratch

But hey, starting from scratch has its allure too. Kim shared her son’s journey of starting his own electrical business. In service industries, where you don’t need a storefront, starting fresh can sometimes be more practical and less capital-intensive.

I also brought up my experience with my digital marketing agency. Starting with zero clients was a real challenge, and having just one or two key clients at the start would have made a world of difference.

The Value of Experience and Mentorship

No matter which route you take, having experience in the industry you’re diving into is invaluable. I can’t stress this enough. Work in the industry for a while before you venture out on your own. It gives you a chance to understand the ins and outs, learn the real needs of customers, and see what makes a business tick.

Kim also made a great point about the benefits of attending trade shows and conventions. Networking with peers can give you fresh ideas and valuable insights, especially when they’re not direct competitors.

The Exit Strategy: Parting Ways on Friendly Terms

We all agreed that when it comes to selling a business, it’s best to make a clean break. Whether you’re selling or buying, friendly goodbyes are the way to go. Tom highlighted how keeping the old owner or their family around can lead to unintended conflicts. Different mindsets and operational habits can create friction you just don’t need.

Kim echoed this, saying that a clean slate allows the new owner to fully implement their vision without looking over their shoulder. It's definitely the healthiest way to transition.

Passion, Commitment, and Advisers

As we wrapped up, Kim offered some sage advice: be careful who your advisers are. Surround yourself with people who not only know their stuff but genuinely want you to succeed. I added that family and friends with no business experience — or skin in the game — can sometimes offer well-meaning but misguided advice. Listen politely, but remember, it’s your money and your risk.

Tom brought it home by emphasizing the importance of commitment. Starting a business isn’t something you do on a whim. You have to understand its impact on your life and be ready to dive in completely.

In short, whether you’re buying or starting from scratch, be prepared for a journey of challenges and rewards. Arm yourself with knowledge, gain some experience, and build a network that can help you navigate this exciting and demanding adventure.
