Mastering Family and Business Balance: Learning to Drive and Setting Long-Term Goals
Driving Lessons from Back in the Day
We kicked off the episode with a fun discussion about who taught us to drive. Shirley’s story was awesome; her brother-in-law Walt taught her in an old 1950 Ford convertible in a cornfield! Can you imagine? Today, driving schools rule the roost, but back then, it was all about family teaching family. These conversations really emphasized how driving lessons were more about creating lasting memories and bonds than just learning a skill.
Setting Long-Term Goals: Setting Yourself Up for Success
Then, we transitioned into talking about long-term goals and how to stick to them. Kim was all about writing down her goals and reading them regularly. She mentioned the magic that happens when you physically write something down instead of typing it—it helps you remember and stay focused. It’s a great way to make sure your decisions are steering you towards your goals.
Journaling and Vision Boards
I shared some of my methods too. Journaling has been a lifesaver for me. Writing down not just the goals but what it looks like when they’re achieved makes a world of difference. And then there’s the vision board—a tool I initially was skeptical about, but it worked wonders. Seeing images of your goals every day on something like your computer desktop keeps them front and center in your mind.
Taking Daily Steps
Tom then highlighted the importance of continuous action. He’s all about taking daily steps, no matter how small, to keep moving forward. It’s about maintaining momentum and not letting your goals fall by the wayside because you got distracted or lazy. This approach is key whether you’re looking at short-term goals or something that's a decade out.
Why We Chase After Goals
Finding Your 'Why'
But here’s a biggie—why are you even chasing these goals? If your motivation isn’t genuine or personal, you’re probably gonna lose interest. Simon Sinek’s book, "Start with Why," is great for digging into this concept. Understanding your 'why' heaps a ton of extra energy onto your journey and makes the whole process more satisfying.
Be Ready for Change
Lastly, we touched on the idea that goals often evolve. Tom talked about how plans can shift thanks to new insights or ideas. Being adaptable means you can refine your goals and sometimes find a faster, better path to success. Embracing change keeps you moving forward effectively towards something that's truly worth it.
Bringing it All Together
Whether it’s involving family in learning essential skills like driving or crafting and chasing long-term goals, balancing family and business is an ongoing adventure.
